This policy addresses the circumstances in which the Board of Trustees may rescind a University honor or award to or recognition of an individual. The Board of Trustees must approve all such rescissions.

For purposes of this policy, a University honor, award or recognition includes the following:

  1. An honorary degree.
  2. A university honor, award or recognition.
  3. An honor, award or recognition conferred by a St. Mary’s University academic or administrative unit or department.
  4. A university building or physical space named in honor or in memory of an individual, when no gift agreement exists in which St. Mary’s University is a signatory and which would contractually prohibit removal of the individual’s name from the building or physical space.
  5. A university endowment named in honor or in memory of an individual, when no gift agreement exists in which St. Mary’s is a signatory and which would contractually prohibit rescission of the individual’s name from the endowment.

The Board of Trustees may rescind a University honor or award to or recognition of an individual in the following circumstances:

The individual has pled guilty to or been convicted of one or more felony crimes, or a credible institution or body (including St. Mary’s University), following an administrative or investigative process, has determined that the individual has engaged in:

  • conduct that is inimical to the mission of St. Mary’s University; or
  • unethical or immoral conduct, and such conduct is inimical to the mission of St. Mary’s University; or
  • conduct that is incompatible with the award or honor; or
  • conduct that causes harm to the reputation of St. Mary’s University.
